Toddy is one of the most popular refreshing drinks in Kerala and is widely known as “coconut vodka” by the non-Indian foreigners visiting the place. It is a very mild alcoholic drink that, much like wine, is made out of fermentation. In this process, the coconut palm tree saps are fermented and stored in mud vessels. Though Toddy is tapped from tall palm trees, a process that is a treat to watch, there are some shops that sell the drink or serve it along with the food. So here are the best Toddy halts or the best Toddy shops in Kerala that you must try if you are visiting the southern state.

Amidst breezy coconut palm trees on the bank of the lake Kochi, there is a toddy shop that is becoming more and more popular every day. The calm surrounding makes it a perfect spot to visit with family or friends. So, if you are planning a sightseeing trip to the Kochi lake, make sure you taste the amazing toddy along with the guest-favourite – Rabbit Roast here.
The Mapranam Shappu is located near the Rose bar at Mapranam on the highway from Kodungaloor to Thrissur. The toddy served here are absolutely loveable and the taste is surely going to linger for a long time. Apart from just the toddy, the place also serves lip-smacking dishes of Rabbit, Duck, Crab and Kada Fry. You will be able to order around 26 different dishes straight out from the authentic recipe books of Kerala. However, on the weekdays, only half of them are available.
The Karimpumkala Restaurant is one of the oldest eateries in Kerala and started in 1958 as a small toddy shop. However, in this present day, it is known to serve delicious South Indian delicacies like the Chemmeen Roast and Karimeen Pollichathu. But while you are here, make you gulp in the toddy that is offered. It is situated near the Post Office Junction at MC Road. The top floor of this restaurant is air-conditioned and is open on all seven days of the week from 7:30 in the morning to 9:30 at night.
The Mullapandhal Toddy Shop is one of the oldest and best restaurants in Kerala where you can get a bite of the most authentic south Indian food at reasonable prices. The most popular dishes served here are Njandu Curry (Crab), Meen Thalakkari and Karimeen Pollichathu (Fish). Apart from these, the restaurant also serves some offbeat dishes like Turtle Roast. It is open every day from 9 AM to 9 PM (except on special holidays).

Well though the food is not ment for me so I didn’t pay much attention to it but what I like to appraise is that the post informed me about a cusine that I didn’t knew so far and its always great to learn new things. Commenting on the quality of the post is needless else it already holds a position in Indiblogger justifying it all.
Thank you very much Mohit 🙂

The Toddy shops dot the backwaters of Kerala, and are the centres of social interaction in the midst of the waterways that criss-cross the backwaters of Kerala. Had come across a few while on a cruise in Allapuzha. They bring out the rustic essence of Kerala.
